How long does the Japan Digital Nomad visa take?
Last checked: 2026-11-06
There is no single official processing time for this visa, and the figures we found run from about 10 working days to two months. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs gives 5 working days as the general standard, but says a long-term stay without a Certificate of Eligibility can take from a couple of weeks to several months. Ask your office before you book flights.
What offices say
| Office | Time on its page | Scope |
|---|---|---|
| Ministry of Foreign Affairs | 5 working days as standard. A couple of weeks to several months if more checks are needed, or for a long-term stay without a Certificate of Eligibility. | General visa guidance |
| Brisbane | Generally 10 working days from acceptance. Not guaranteed. | Digital Nomad visas |
| Sydney | 5 business days as standard, but this excludes Designated Activities visas. No figure for those. | General visa guidance |
| Los Angeles | Referred to Japan's head office. Response may take up to two months. | Visa notes for this type |
| Portland | Referred to Japan's head office. Response may take up to two months. | This visa type |
| San Francisco | At least 5 business days with complete documents | This visa type |
| Chicago | Most visas 5 to 7 business days. Some need consultation with headquarters in Japan and take longer. | General visa guidance |
| Edinburgh | In most cases 5 working days after acceptance | General visa guidance, not specific to this type |
The dates that limit your plan
- Three-month validity: consulate checklists describe a single-entry visa valid for three months from issue. You must enter within that time.
- Six-month stay: the Chicago checklist counts the six months from the date of entry.
- Earliest application: San Francisco says to apply within three months of entering Japan. Sydney says the earliest you can apply is three months before your planned travel date, as a general rule.
- Fresh papers: Melbourne says documents for visa purposes must generally be issued within three months. Ask your office about income papers.
- Insurance dates: the policy period must match your planned stay.
Step-by-step timeline
This plan is our own. It uses a target arrival of April 1, 2027 and an office that may take up to two months. Change the dates to fit yours.
| When | Step |
|---|---|
| By October 2026 | Check that your nationality and income fit. See the list and income rules. Find which office covers where you live. |
| November 2026 | Download your office's current checklist. Ask how long it takes, and whether it applies the general three-month limit. |
| December 2026 | Get insurance terms and written answers from the insurer. See the insurance page. Do not assume a policy qualifies. |
| Early January 2027 | Order certificates, so they are recent. Book your appointment. Each person may need their own. |
| January 1 to January 31, 2027 | Submit. January 1 is three months before arrival. January 31 is 60 days before arrival, which leaves about two months for processing. |
| February to March 2027 | Wait for the result. Avoid non-refundable bookings until you have the visa. |
| April 1, 2027 | Enter Japan. Your visa must still be valid. |
| About September 30, 2027 | End of stay, by our count. Ask immigration for your exact last day. Check the 183-day tax count too. |
At a slow office, the safe window can be about one month. Apply too early and you may be refused, or lose validity. Apply too late and the visa may not arrive in time. That is why we suggest asking your office first.
Where you apply affects timing
The Q&A says that if you are outside Japan, you should apply directly at the embassy or consulate of the country where you are staying, because no one in Japan can act as your agent for a Certificate of Eligibility. San Francisco says you must live in its area, and Los Angeles asks for proof of your current address. If you travel while you apply, ask whether your office will accept you. See where to apply.
What we could not confirm
- Current figures: offices can change their times. Ask yours.
- Refusals and appeals: we found no time limit for a decision. See what happens after a rejection.
- Certificate route: we found no processing time for a Certificate of Eligibility for this status.
- Late entry: we did not find what happens if your insurance dates and your entry date no longer match. Ask your insurer and office.
See the documents and fees page for each item you will need.
