Japan Digital Nomad visa stay calculator

Enter your entry date to estimate when six months end, how your stay compares with 183 days, and what dates to check for a second stay. These dates are our own count, not official ones. Ask immigration for your exact last day.
How this estimate works
- Six-month end: the maximum stay is six months, and renewal is not permitted. The Chicago checklist counts the six months from the date of entry. We add six calendar months, then go back one day. If that month has no matching day, we use its last day first, which gives the earlier date.
- Day count: we count both the first and the last day. If you leave the last day empty, we use the six-month end.
- 183 days: pay for work in Japan can be exempt if you meet your tax convention's terms, which in most cases include staying 183 days or less. Terms vary, and people from places with no convention are not eligible. Other days in Japan can count too.
- Six months after you leave: the official Q&A says you can re-enter with the same status once six months have passed after leaving. It does not list the steps, or say whether you need a new application.
- Twelve months after you enter: the stay must not exceed six months within a year. The documents we read do not explain how the year is counted. This date is one way to read it, so a return before it may matter. Ask before you plan a second stay.
- Three months before you enter: consulate checklists describe a single-entry visa valid for three months from issue. San Francisco says to apply within three months of entering Japan, and Sydney says the earliest you can apply is three months before travel, as a general rule. Ask how your office treats this.
- Latest submission: we take your office's time away from your entry date. There is no single official processing time, so we set no default.
Worked example
This plan is an example. You enter on April 1, 2027, leave the last day empty, and your office says it may take 60 days.
| Item | Result |
|---|---|
| Six-month end | September 30, 2027 |
| Days in Japan | 183 days |
| Compared with 183 | At the limit of 183 |
| Your day 183 | September 30, 2027 |
| Six months after you leave | March 30, 2028 |
| Twelve months after you enter | April 1, 2028 |
| Three months before you enter | January 1, 2027 |
| Latest submission | January 31, 2027 |
| Days between those two dates | 30 days |
A stay that starts on March 1, 2027 ends on August 31, 2027 by the same count. That is 184 days, one day over. So a full six months can pass 183 days, depending on the months.
What this leaves out
- Time abroad: you can leave and return during your stay with a re-entry permission. The Q&A does not say that time abroad extends the expiration date. This tool does not subtract those days.
- Other time in Japan: a holiday before the stay can add days to your tax count. The US and UK test looks at any 12-month period, so a second stay may be counted with the first.
- Repeat stays: we found no official limit, and no statement that repeat stays are unlimited.
- Changing status: the documents we read do not cover a change from inside Japan. Do not assume it is possible.
- Processing time: consulate figures may change. A late entry may leave your insurance dates and entry date out of line, and we did not find what happens then.
- Dates of the sources: the Q&A is dated July 2024, so confirm the rules with a Japanese embassy or consulate.
We could not confirm that SafetyWing Nomad Insurance meets every requirement of Japan's insurance rule. Do not assume it qualifies. Before you buy or apply, confirm in writing with the insurer and with the Japanese embassy or consulate handling your application.
